Abstract
Cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyls are prepared by reacting a manganous compound with a cyclopentadienyl hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide in the presence of a transition metal carbonyl and an element from Group II or Group IIIa of the Periodic Table (Deming). Preferably the reaction is conducted in a liquid medium, e.g. an ether-dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, methylethyl ether, anisole, diphenyl ether, dioxan, tetrahydrofuran, ethylene glycol dialkyl (C1-C6) ethers, diethylene glycol dialkyl ethers-, an amine-propylamine, diethylamine, di-n-propylamine and other C1-C10 alkylamines, aniline, methyl aniline, dicyclohexylamine-, an amide-formamide, an alkyl formamide such as N,N-dimethylformamide, N-methyl pyrrolidone, hexamethyl phosphoramide-, or a nitrile such as acetonitrile, propionitrile, and butyronitrile. Cyclopentadienyl hydrocarbons include the substituted cyclopentadienes, indene and fluorene. Manganous halides are preferred, but the oxide, sulphide, sulphate, carbonate, nitrate and salts of C1-C10 organic acids may also be used. The Group II or IIIa element should be finely-divided and free from oxide coating. The reaction may be carried out at a pressure from 25 to 8000 pound per square inch and at a temperature between 0 DEG and 300 DEG C.
