Abstract

1 - Alkoxybutene - (1) - ones - (3) are prepared by splitting off alkanol from 3-ketobutyraldehyde-dialkylacetals at 80-170 DEG C. in the liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising iron, cobalt, nickel, copper or zinc in the form of a metal, oxide or salt. The catalyst may be in the form of a metal forming part of the reactor. The catalyst is suitably used in amounts of 0.01 to 5% by weight of the acetal, but up to 20% may be used. 0.01 to 3% by weight of a basic-reacting inorganic compound with reference to the acetal may be present. Pressures above or below atmospheric may be used.
