Abstract
Pantothenyl alcohol is prepared by reacting a : g - dihydroxy - b : b - dimethyl - g - butyramide with allyl alcohol or with 3-aminopropanol-1 in the presence of a solvent such as an aliphatic alcohol. The reaction when using 3-aminopropanol-1, and preferably also when using allyl alcohol, is carried out at a temperature between 30 DEG and 200 DEG C. at a pressure between 1 and 50 atmospheres and more preferably in either case at 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. at 10 to 30 atmospheres. When using allyl alcohol it is advantageous to carry out the reaction in the presence of ammonia or a compound yielding it under the reaction conditions, e.g. excess of the amide. The beginning of the reaction may be accelerated by adding a small amount of an alkali metal or an alkali metal hydroxide. Examples illustrate the various features of the invention, using propyl alcohol, water and methanol as solvents. Specification 478,304, [Group IV], is referred to.
