Abstract
The invention relates to the compound N - [ 41 - ( betahydroxyethyl ) - diethylene - diamino-11-methyl] tetracycline which is very soluble in water and has the formula <FORM:0888968/IV (b)/1> It is prepared by reacting tetracycline base with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde and N-(betahydroxyethyl)-ethylene diamine in an inert solvent such as methanol, n-butanol, isopropanol or ethyl acetate at 20 DEG C. to 60 DEG C. for 1 to 6 hours and precipitating by the addition of ether. Injectable aqueous solutions of the above tetracycline are used medicinally.
