Abstract

The invention comprises (1) a process for the preparation of glucuronamides and N-alkyl-glucuronamides wherein glucuronolactone or a glucuronic ester is reacted with ammonia or a mono- or di-alkylamine in the presence of water; and (2) N-alkyl-glycuronamides and N,N-dialkyl-glucuronamides, wherein each alkyl group contains at most 7 carbon atoms. The process may be effected in water only or in a solvent miscible with water, preferably at a temperature below 25 DEG C. Surplus amine and by-products may be removed by means of a cation exchange resin and free glucuronic acid by an anion exchange resin. Examples are given.
