Abstract

A wetting composition comprises (a) a condensate of less than 5 mols. of an alkylene oxide with each mol. of an organic compound having at least one replaceable hydrogen atom and less than 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, (b) a smaller quantity, usually 2-25% by weight of the total of (a) and (b), of a condensate or more than 4 mols. of an alkylene oxide with each mol. of an organic compound having at least one replaceable hydrogen atom and at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, and (c) a carboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms, or a relatively insoluble metal salt thereof, such as an alkaline-earth metal or aluminium salt, generally in an amount of 0.5-30% by weight of the total of (a) and (b). The organic compounds of (a) and (b) are suitably phenols, carboxylic acids, mercaptans, amines, amides and sulphonamides, but are preferably fatty alcohols. The acid (c) may be a branched chain carboxylic acid, which may contain hydroxy groups, or a naphthenic acid, but is preferably a fatty acid of natural origin. If desired, the relatively insoluble salt of such acid may be formed in situ by adding a water-soluble salt such as magnesium acetate to the composition containing the free carboxylic acid in stoichiometric or less than stoichiometric amounts.ALSO:A wetting composition, suitable for use where little foaming is required, as in dye baths, bucking baths and sizing liquors, comprises (a) a condensate of less than 5 mols. of an alkylene oxide with each mol. of an organic compound having at least one replaceable hydrogen atom and less than 12 carbon atoms in the molecule; (b) a smaller quantity, usually 2-25% by weight of the total of (a) and (b), of a condensate of more than 4 mols. of an alkylene oxide with each mol. of an organic compound having at least one replaceable hydrogen atom and at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule; and (c) a carboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms, or a relatively insoluble metal salt thereof, such as an alkaline-earth metal or aluminium salt, generally in an amount of 0.5-30% by weight of the total of (a) and (b). If desired, the relatively insoluble salt of such acid may be formed in situ by adding a water-soluble salt such as magnesium acetate to the composition containing the free carboxylic acid in stoichiometric or less than stoichiometric amounts.
