Abstract

A solution for forming a phosphate coating on a metallic surface, e.g. of zinc, cadmium, aluminium or iron, comprises: (a) at least one halogenated hydrocarbon having a boiling point between 50 DEG and 160 DEG C., such as C2HCl3 and/or C2Cl4, fluoro- or fluorochloro-hydrocarbons; (b) phosphoric acid, e.g. between 0.1 and 30 g/l.; (e) water at least 0.1 and preferably to 20 g/l.; (d) at least one alcohol whose boiling point is below 160 DEG C., preferably aliphatic alcohols, such as between 50 and 300 g/l. of ethanol and/or propanol, having up to 5 carbon atoms per molecule; and (e) at least one compound containing the glyoxime grouping (: C = NOH)2, such as dimethyl glyoxime, and/or at least one compound containing the grouping <FORM:0912970/II/1> such as indigo, as a dust-preventing agent. The concentration of the dust-preventing agent may be between 5 and 1000 mg/l. for each class of compound. Stabilizers such as propargyl alcohol or other compounds containing the -C C- grouping may be added. The solution may be applied by spraying, flooding or immersion.
