Abstract

1,272,511. Explosive compositions. IRECO CHEMICALS. 24 April, 1970 [25 April, 1969], No. 19760/70. Heading C1D. An aqueous slurry explosive contains, by weight, 45-55% of an inorganic oxidizer of which at least two-thirds is ammonium nitrate, 32-43% of finely-divided aluminium, 11-18% of a liquid the major part of which is water, and a polysaccharide thickener. Water-miscible liquids such as ethylene glycol, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes and amides may also be present. The thickener may be ordinary, cross-linking, or bacteria-modified guar gum, or pre-gelled starch. A mixture of paint grade and atomized aluminium may be used. Other optional ingredients of the composition are sodium nitrate, TNT, RDX, nitrocellulose, ammonium phosphate, and boric acid. To reduce the density of the slurry, expanded rigid polystyrene may be added, or gas bubbles may be formed. The slurry may be filled into bombs where it sets to a stiff rubbery consistency. A wider blast area is produced than with similar explosives of lower aluminium content.
