Abstract

1445594 Explosive compositions IRECO CHEMICALS 6 Sept 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 41895/73 Heading C1D An explosive blasting composition is made by dispersing a liquid hydrocarbon or tall oil fuel in a thickened aqueous solution of an inorganic oxidizer salt, for example ammonium nitrate with or without sodium nitrate. The hydrocarbon may be fuel oil, gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, paraffin oil, benzene, toluene, or xylene. The thickening agent for the aqueous solution may be a biopolymer produced using the microorganism Xanthomanos campestris, or an alkyl-substituted guar gum, which may be supplemented by a normal guar gum, a starch or a polymeric product, together with sodium dichromate as a cross-linking agent. Sodium nitrite may be added as a gassing agent, or air may be stirred in, in order to reduce the density of the composition. Other optional ingredients are particulate aluminium, magnesium alloy, sulphur, vegetable grains, starch, thiourea, ethylene glycol and formamide. Additional dry particulate oxidizer salt may also be added.
