Abstract

1344566 Explosive compositions IRECO CHEMICALS 24 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 24462/72 Heading C1D An explosive composition comprises at least 15% by weight of calcium nitrate, another inorganic nitrate, a liquid hydrocarbon, water, and a thickening agent, and contains gas bubbles so as to lower the density, for example to 1À0-1À3 gms./c.c. The calcium nitrate assists emulsification of the liquid hydrocarbon in the aqueous phase and accelerates hardening of the composition in the ground. The other inorganic nitrates referred to are ammonium and sodium nitrates; chlorates and sodium perchlorate may also be present. Liquid hydrocarbons specified are benzene, toluene, xylene, gasoline, kerosene, and fuel oil. Gas bubbles may be produced in the composition by stirring in air or by addition of sodium nitrite together with thiourea. The thickening agent may be guar gum, starch, or a synthetic polysaccharide produced by fermentation. An aqueous solution of ferric nitrate and sodium dichromate or a mixture of dimethylformamide and TiCl 4 may be used as a crosslinking agent. Other optional ingredients are magnesium alloy and aluminium.
