Abstract

1361265 Treating ammonium nitrate; explosive compositions KINETICS INTERNATIONAL CORP 30 Sept 1971 [8 Oct 1970] 45615/71 Headings C1A and C1D Ammonium nitrate prills are activated by mixing with 0À3 to 6% by weight of water or other solvent and heating to evaporate nearly all the solvent. The bulk density of the prills is decreased and their oil retention capability increased. Addition of a liquid fuel to the activated ammonium nitrate produces an explosive mixture which is detonable by a No. 6 cap. Suitable fuels are benzene, toluene, xylene, ethyl benzene, gasoline, petroleum naphtha, methanol, ethanol, butyl acetate, ketones, acids, aldehydes, ethers, or amines. As a sensitizer, nitromethane, nitropropane, or dinitrotoluene oil may be added. The activated ammonium nitrate may be transported in containers, Figs. 2-6 (not shown), to which the mixture of fuel and sensitizer is added at the place of use.
