Abstract

1,212,582. Explosive compositions. EXPLOSIVES CORP. OF AMERICA. 16 Feb., 1968 [17 April, 1967], No. 7628/68. Heading C1D. An explosive composition comprises hydrazinium nitrate, hydrazine, and ammonia. Part of the hydrazinium nitrate may be replaced by hydrazinium perchlorate or by Na, K, Ca, or Al nitrate or perchlorate. The ammonia lowers the freezing point of the composition; other additives for this purpose are hydrazinium thiocyanate and monomethyl hydrazine. As desentitizing agents the following may be added: water, glycerine, glycol, or hydrocarbon oil. The composition may be in the form of a liquid of low viscosity or may be converted into a gel by adding finely divided silica, methyl acetate, cross-linking polysaccharide, or carboxy vinyl polymer. Polyethylene oxide resin may be present as a waterproofing agent. To assist the adsorption of the liquid explosive by porous media, a wetting agent may be included; for example dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl formamide, ethanol and propanol. Water or sand may be included to reduce the detonation velocity. To bring about desensitization or destruction of the explosive after it has been placed in position, capsules may be added made of a material soluble in hydrazine and containing, for example, water for desensitization or iodine pentoxide or nitrogen tetroxide for deflagration. The composition may be prepared by mixing ammonium nitrate, with or without ammonium perchlorate, with hydrazine; ammonia is evolved and hydrazinium nitrate is formed, excess ammonia being removed by vacuum or by heating. Alternatively, cloth or sponge impregnated with ammonium nitrate, or ammonium nitrate by itself, may be placed in position for use, and then the hydrazine added. The composition may also be used for the explosive laminating of a metal sheet to a solid substrate.
