Abstract

1344148 Explosive compositions DOW CHEMICAL CO 14 Oct 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 47776/71 Heading C1D An explosive composition contains dispersed gas-containing hollow monocellular thermoplastic particles, in an amount, for example, of up to 5% by weight. The particles may be made from a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile, polymethyl methacrylate, copolymers of methyl methacrylate with acrylonitrile, styrene, ethyl acrylate, ortho-chlorostyrene, paratertiary-butylstyrene, vinyl acetate, or butyl acrylate, a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile, poly(ortho-chlorostyrene) or poly(vinylbenzyl chloride). Neopentaneorisobutane may be used as a blowing agent to form the hollow particles. Cast solid explosives may contain TNT, ammonium nitrate, tetryl, ammonium picrate, PETN, cyclonite, and/or particulate aluminium, and may also include a setting agent or a thermosetting resin. Thickened or gelled slurry or liquid explosives may contain nitroglycerine, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, water, Al particles, formamide, or ethylene glycol, together with dispersing, thickening, cross-linking, or inhibiting agents, or acids. Tables are given comparing the performance of explosive compositions containing the hollow thermoplastic particles with similar compositions containing hollow particles of glass and thermosetting resin, and expanded perlite.
