Abstract

A powder composition which forms a soft non-separating, highly viscous, cohesive explosive gel on addition of water has as its essential constituents 25-50% by weight of ammonium nitrate; 5 to 25% by weight of alkali metal nitrate; 20-40% by weight of a sensitizer explosive; 0.5 to 5% by weight of a polyacrylamide which has an apparent molecular weight of at least 100,000 and a free acid content of 0.1 to 8%; 0.05 to 0.5% by weight of a water soluble polvalent metal inorganic salt cross-linking agent for said polyacrylamide; and 0.6 to 2.5% by weight of a neutral liquid. The polyacrylamide preferably contains at least 2000 acylamide units and has an apparent molecular weight between 100,000 and 3.5 million, preferably between one million and three million. The weight ratio of ammonium nitrate to expolsive sensitizer is from 5:2 to 5:8; that of ammonium nitrate to alkali metal nitrate from 1:1 to 10:1 and that of the polyacrylamide to polyvalent metal salt is from 10:1 to 15:1. The neutral liquid is preferably water but may be glycerine or glycol. The sensitizer explosives specified are smokeless powder, TNT and other known nitrated equivalents and cyclonite. It is indicated that the particle size of the sensitizer has an effect on the amount necessary in a given composition. The composition is prepared by adding to the metal salt cross-linking agent, e.g. aluminium sulphate, the remaining ingredients. The cross-linking agent is first dissolved in a little liquid, the sensitizer and the alkali-metal nitrate added and mixed to a uniform consistency, meanwhile a dry blend of the ammonium nitrate and polyacrylamide is formed, and then added to the first portion of the mix, and the whole blended to a uniform admixture, mixing being stopped before any resegregation of the ingredients is initiated. Specifications 825,367 and 979,729 are referred to.
