An explosive composition in gel or slurry form and of high detonation velocity comprising an inorganic oxidizer salt, nitroglycerine, nitrocellulose, water, and a water thickening agent, is made by pre-gelling the nitroglycerine with the nitrocellulose, mixing with 10-50% of the oxidizer salt, and adding the water, followed by the remainder of the oxidizing salt and the thickening agent. The inorganic salt may be ammonium nitrate, with or without sodium nitrate; other salts referred to are nitrates of K, Ca, Mg, Sr, and Ba. The term " nitroglycerine " includes other liquid explosive nitric esters, for example nitrated mixtures of glycerine and ethylene glycol. Suitable thickening agents are guar gum, polyacrylamide, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, water-swellable starch, sodium cellulose glycollate, methyl cellulose, and water-soluble copolymers of maleic anhydride with methyl vinyl ether or styrene; cross-linking agents referred to are potassium dichromate and other specified metal salts. Other optional ingredients are fuels such as coal dust, charcoal, bagasse, dextrin, starch, wood meal, flour, bran, pecan meal, hydrocarbon oils, aluminium, magnesium, ferrosilicon, and sulphur, and antacids such as ZnO, CaCO 3 , Al 2 O 3 and Na 2 CO 3 .
