1305601 Explosive compositions SOC E J BARBIER 5 Feb 1970 [6 Feb 1969] 5658/70 Heading C1D An explosive composition comprises a mixture of an explosive sensitizing agent with ammonium nitrate of surface area greater than 700 cm.<SP>2</SP>/g. Alternatively the sensitizing agent may be aluminium in the absence of a solid combustible organic fuel. The explosive sensitizing agent may be nitroglycerine, nitroglycol, TNT, PETN, hexogen, or nitrostarch. Other additives referred to are glycol, glycerine, a hydrocarbon, mono- and di-nitrotoluene, cellulose, naphthalene, calcium silicate, ferrosilicon, ferrophosphorus, sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, alkali metal tartrate or oxalate, barium sulphate, manganese dioxide, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, kieselguhr, guar gum, and bichromate. To form a slurry explosive, up to 20% by weight of water may be added. The high surface area ammonium nitrate may be obtained by crystallization in the presence of surface active agents.
