Abstract
An explosive composition comprises nitroglycerine, glycol dinitrate or isopropyl nitrate, adsorbed on finely divided carbonaceous fuel, an oxidizing salt, and water. The composition is flowable, but sufficiently viscous to prevent segregation of the ingredients. Suitable carbonaceous fuels are woodmeal, ryeflour, wheatflour, paper pulp, foamed rubber, polystyrene or polyurethane, charcoal, coke, or carbon black. The preferred oxidizing salt is ammonium nitrate; others referred to are sodium, potassium and calcium nitrates, chlorates, and perchlorates. Urea, ethylene glycol and glycerine may be added to reduce viscosity and guar gum, with or without zinc chromate, to increase viscosity. The addition of dinitrotoluene lowers sensitivity. Paraffin oil or wax may also be present and diammonium phosphate, chalk and urea act as antacids. A small amount of nitrocellulose may be added to increase the viscosity of the nitroglycerine. Aluminium, magnesium and ferrosilicon may be present as additional fuels.
