Abstract
1364920 Explosive compositions KINETICS INTERNATIONAL CORP 30 Sept 1971 [8 Oct 1970] 45616/71 Heading C1D [Also in Division F3] An explosive composition sensitive to a No. 6 blasting cap comprises a solid porous absorbent material having an average particle size less than 1000 microns and consisting of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium nitrate or perchlorate, diatomaceous earth, or expanded silica, together with a liquid nitrogenous hydrocarbon derivative insensitive to a No. 6 cap, in an amount less than that required to fill the interstitial volume of the solid component, so that 2-90% by volume of the composition is a gaseous component. Liquid components specified are nitromethane and dinitrotoluene oil. Benzene, toluene, xylene, naphtha, methanol, ethanol, propanol, lower ethers, ketones, aldehydes, acids, and esters, and gasoline fractions may be added as fuels to the liquid component. Before mixing, the components of the explosive may be sealed in flexible containers made of laminates of polyethylene, polypropylene or a polyester with aluminium foil. The composition may be used to detonate a secondary explosive consisting of nitromethane or a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil.
