Abstract

780,308. Blasting devices. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 19, 1955 [Feb. 25, 1955], No. 5676/55. Class 9(1) A package for use in blasting operations comprises a cylindrical waterproof container enclosing two non-explosive charges which are kept apart until the package is to be used and when mixed form an explosive. One charge is predominantly ammonium nitrate and the other consists of particles of a solid fuel which may be finely divided dried organic material such as wood, cork dust, charcoal, cereal meals, peat. lignite, coal or anthracite. Paint fine aluminium powder may be mixed with the fuel. The container 1 may be a metal cylinder containing the ammonium nitrate 5 and a rubber bag 4 filled with the fuel 6. A cup-shaped lid 2 closing the package is secured by an adhesive strip 3. To use the package, the bag 4 is taken out and its contents poured into the ammonium nitrate. The lid 2 is replaced and the packet shaken to mix the contents. In the arrangement of Fig. 2, the fuel 6 is separated from the charge 5 by a stretched membrane 10 adapted to be pierced by a pin 9 projecting from the lid 2, when the lid is forced downwards. During storage a stop 7 prevents movement of the lid. The explosive mixture obtained on mixing the charges may be 90 per cent ammonium nitrate, 5 per cent aluminium and 5 per cent bagasse, all parts being by weight. Specification 780,309 is referred to.
