Abstract

780,309. Blasting cartridges; blasting explosives. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 19, 1955 [Feb. 25, 1955], No. 5677/55. Classes 9(1) and 9(2) Blasting device comprises a package of ammonium nitrate in a cylindrical waterproof container one end wall of the container having a central part of soft, elastic material which is self-sealing after being punctured by a needle of an injection means. The sheet metal canister 1 has an annular end wall 7 closed by rubber pad 8 compressed by an annulus 9 soldered to the wall 7. To use the package, the pad 8 is pierced by a needle 4 and liquid organic fuel 6 is injected to wet the particles of ammonium nitrate in the container and so form an explosive mixture as in Specification 780,308. The fuel may contain a small amount of liquid which reduces the surface tension between the fuel and ammonium nitrate, e.g. a long chain alkyl aryl dialkyl ester of phosphoric acid. Liquid aromatic and aliphatic hydro-carbons, alcohols and glyceride oils may be used as fuels.
