Abstract

A liquid hydrocarbon fuel composition contains 0.1 to 30 lbs per 1000 barrels of a betaine of the formula: <FORM:0858269/III/1> wherein R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical, R2 and R3 are aliphatic hydrocarbyl radicals, and R4 is an aliphatic radical which may be a hydrocarbyl radical or may have the formula: <FORM:0858269/III/2> or the formula: <FORM:0858269/III/3> where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbyl radical. The betaine is present to reduce the tendency for the fuel to become electrostatically charged. The fuel may be gasoline, kerosene, jet fuel, diesel fuel, heating oil or a solvent naphtha. In examples jet fuels, kerosene, gasoline (containing tetraethyl lead) and Stoddart solvent contain N-(2-hydroxy-3-octadecenyl-oxypropyl) betaine, N-(2-hydroxy-3-octadecenyl-oxypropyl) -N, N-diisopropyl glycine, N-(2-hydroxy-3-octadecyloxypropyl) betaine, betaines of the formula: <FORM:0858269/III/4> where R is lauryl, octadecyl and methyl and R1 is -CH2-, decyl CH< and cetyl CH<, a betaine of formula: <FORM:0858269/III/5> and N-lauryl betaine.
