Abstract

A fuel composition suitable for use in an internal-combustion engine of the compression ignition type (e.g. diesel fuels) comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon or a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling in the range of from 175 DEG to 400 DEG C. and from 0.001 to 1.0% by weight of an oil-soluble polyoxyalkylene compound or an oil-soluble mixture of polyoxyalkylene compounds respresented by the general formula R1-O-(R2-O-)nR3, wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 10 alkyl radical, R2 represents a 1,2-alkylene radical having 2 or 3 carbon atoms, R3 is a C1- 10 alkyl radical and n is a positive integer of at least 4, at least 25% of the 1,2-alkylene radicals being 1,2-propylene radicals and the average number of the 1,2-alkylene radicals in the compound or mixture being such that the viscosity of the compound or mixture is from 7 to 1100 cst. Instead of being added to the fuel, the polyoxy-alkylene compounds may also be admitted to the combustion chamber intermittently as a separate charge.
