Abstract

Additives for gasoline fuels for use in internal combustion engines are the reaction products of alcohols or phenols with alkylene oxides or mixtures of alkylene oxides. These additives have the general formula R1-O(-R2-O)n-R3, where R1 and R3 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl, R2 is an alkylene radical and n is greater than 4. The fuels may contain from 0.1 to 10 per cent. by weight of the additive and in addition may contain water, a monohydric alcohol and an anti-detonant. Additives specified are "Ucon' (Registered Trade Mark), and the condensation products of butyl alcohol with 1 : 2 - propylene oxide or mixtures of ethylene and propylene oxides. The additives, either alone or mixed with a supplementary fuel, may be introduced into the main fuel stream either continuously or intermittently by an automatic metering device which operates only when the engine is functioning at full throttle. A suitable apparatus for such intermittent injection of supplementary fuel and additive is described (see Group XXVII). The supplementary fuel may contain from 30-90 per cent. by weight of a monohydric alcohol such as methanol, 5-65 per cent. by weight of water or high octane hydrocarbons and an anti-detonant such as 0.1 to 15 cc. per gallon of tetraethyl lead and/or 5 - 20 per cent. by weight of monomethyl aniline, iron or nickel carbonyl, glycols, benzene, phenols or xylidine.
