Abstract

Compounds of the formula <FORM:0701459/III/1> where x and y are integers, X represents a polyhydric alcohol residue and R a hydrocarbon group having from 11 to 21 carbon atoms, are added to jet fuels to prevent plugging of the filters at low temperature, due to ice formation from water contained in the fuel. In the preferred compounds, R is an oleic radical (C17H33) and X may be a sorbitan residue. A particularly desirable compound is H(O.CH2CH2)6 O.CH2.CH2.O.COC17H33. The preferred concentrations are from 0.005 to 0.5 per cent. by volume, and in particular from 0.01 to 0.2 per cent. by volume. Any jet fuel may be used, but those specified are JP-1 and JP-3 grades of U.S.A. Specification MIL-F, 5616 and 5624, respectively. The additives may also be used with motor gasolines.
