Abstract

A fuel composition which, when contaminated with water and employed at low temperatures, has no tendency to deposit ice, comprises a liquid hydrocarbon fuel together with a minor proportion of a compound soluble therein and having the general formula:- <FORM:0760105/III/1> where R3, R4, R5 and R6 are hydrogen or alkyl groups, at least one of them being an alkyl group and n is an integer not greater than 20. Examples of compounds of this formula are di-, tri- and tetrapropylene glycol. The liquid hydrocarbon fuel may be a jet engine fuel derived from or made up of petroleum hydrocarbons. According to the Provisional Specification, the compound present in minor proportion has the general formula:- <FORM:0760105/III/2> where R1, R2, R3, R4 and R6 ar hydrogen or alkyl groups, at least one of them being an alkyl group, and n is an integer not greater than 20. Examples of compounds of this formula are ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether and "Carbitol." A jet engine fuel containing 0.025 or 0.05 per cent and of "Carbitol" is described. For comparison purposes, a jet engine fuel containing 0.05 per cent of tetraethylene glycol is described.
