Abstract

A lubricating composition, which may be employed in a diesel engine, comprises a major proportion of mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a glycide ether of formula: <FORM:0851845/III/1> wherein R is an alkyl radical containing at least 12 carbon atoms. Suitable glycide ethers are 4-n- or iso-dodecyl-phenoxy-propene oxide, 3-pentadecyl-phenoxy-propene oxide and 4-n-or iso-octadecyl-phenoxy-propene oxide. The glycide ether imparts thermal stability, good high-pressure properties and detergency to the composition. Anti-oxidants (e.g. p-amino-phenol) or anti-corrosion agents (e.g. sodium nitrite) may also be present in the composition. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described which contain 4-iso-dodecyl-, 3-pentadecyl- or 4-octadecyl-phenoxy-propene oxides. For comparison purposes, similar compositions are mentioned containing phenoxy-propene oxide, 3-methyl-4-isopropyl-phenoxy-propene oxide or 2-methyl-3-isopropyl-phenoxy-propene oxide.
