Abstract

Oils and facts are stabilzed against oxidation by means of a composition comprising propylene glycol (20 to 80 per cent), a gallic acid alky ester with from 1 to 5 carbon atoms in the alkly radical (3 to 30 per cent), and an alkylated hydroxphenyl ether of the formula <FORM:0682205/III/1> wherein R1 represents a methyl or ethyl group and R2 represents a tertiary alkyl group containing 4 or 5 carbon atoms (10 to 50 per cent). A synergizing acid such as citric, orthophosphoric, metaphosophoric, tartaric, ascorbic acid (3 to 10 per cent) may also be present. In one example propylene glycol 60 parts, butylated hydroxyanisole 23.5 parts, n-propyl gallate 11.8 parts and citric acid 4.7 parts are employed in the ratio of 1 pound of composition to 1 ton of lard. Other specified oils or fats are tallow, peanut oil, palm oil, coconut oil, cottonseed oil, soya-bean oil, sunflowerseed oil and sesame oil. Shortenings and fat and oil mixtures may also be treated.
