Abstract

The invention provides a lubricating composition containing a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil and minor proportion of an oil soluble saturated mono-carboxylic acid of formula <FORM:1028924/C4-C5/1> where R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms, R11 and R111 are hydrogen or alkyl groups which may be the same or different provided that they contain a total of 2 to 28 carbon atoms, and X is oxygen or sulphur, dissolved therein. R11 and R111 preferably contain a total of 5-18 carbon atoms. The lubricating compositions preferably contain from 0.005% to 1% by weight of the carboxylic acid. Other conventional additives may be added such as antioxidants, extreme pressure agents and pour point depressants.
