Abstract

A mixture of antioxidant additives containing (a) one or more of the hindered phenolic type; and (b) 4,41-tetramethyldiaminodiphenylmethane, <FORM:0807102/III/1> , has an antioxidant effect greater than the additive effect of the two ingredients separately when added to lubricating oils. To obtain the greater effect they should be mixed in proportions that will give between 0.005 and 0.2 per cent by weight of (b) and between 0.005 and 0.8 per cent by weight of (a) when added to the lubricant. Examples of (a) are: <FORM:0807102/III/2> where R1 is an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms, R2 is a secondary or tertiary alkyl group containing up to 8 carbon atoms, R3 is an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, and R4 is an alkyl group containing 1-8 carbon atoms. In examples, 2,21-methylene bis - (4 - ethyl - 6 - tertiary butyl phenol), 2,21-methylene bis - (4 - methyl - 6 - tertiary butyl phenol), and 2,6 - ditertiary butyl - 4 - methyl phenol and the mixed products obtained by reacting an alkylated phenol with formaldehyde are each used as the hindered phenolic ingredient in antioxidant compositions according to the invention which are added to an SAE 20 mineral turbine oil having a viscosity of 150 SUS/100 DEG F.
