Abstract

An oil composition for use in two-stroke engine fuel/lubricating oil blends comprises a naphthenic mineral oil, viscosity between 65 and 85 S.U.S./210 DEG F., minor proportions of an oil-soluble alkali or particularly alkaline-earth metal sulphonate the preferred concentration being between 0.5% and 10%, particularly 1-3% by volume and/or an alkaline-earth metal salt of an alkyl phenol sulphide, the preferred concentration being 0.5-5%, particularly 1-2%, and a minor proportion not less than 11% by volume (preferably 11.5 to 14%) based on this total composition of a mineral oil of viscosity greater than 100 S.U.S./210 DEG F. (preferably between 100 and 200 SUS/210 DEG F.). The composition contains also, preferably, a third mineral oil, viscosity between 25 and 55 S.U.S./210 DEG F. and optionally 0.05% to 0.5% by volume of a polyalkylene glycol surface-active agent, e.g. the fatty or naphthenic esters thereof. The alkyl phenol sulphide, wherein the alkyl group contains 4-12 carbon atoms and is particularly iso-octyl, may be prepared by sulphurizing the appropriate alkyl phenol, the product being neutralized with an alkaline-earth metal base; the metal in the salt formed is preferably barium, although calcium or mixed calcium/barium salts may be used.
