Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises a hydrocarbon lubricating oil gelled with one or more lithium soaps of hydroxy fatty acids and minor proportions of a water-soluble nitrite or chromate corrosion inhibitor and an oil-soluble organic calcium sulphonate. The hydrocarbon lubricating oil may have an average molecular weight between 250 and 800 and may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. a bright stock. The lithium soaps may be salts of hydroxy fatty acids having between 12 and 24 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. acids derived from hydrogenated castor oil, 9,10-dihydroxy stearic acid, 4-hydroxy palmitic acid, and quince oil acids. The water-soluble corrosion inhibitor may be an alkali metal, amine, or ammonium nitrite or chromate, e.g. sodium, potassium, lithium or ammonium nitrite, sodium, potassium or ammonium chromate, an alkyl ammonium nitrite such as di-isopropyl ammonium nitrite, or a cyclo-aliphatic amine nitrite such as dicyclohexylamine nitrite. The calcium sulphonates are preferably calcium hydrocarbon sulphonates such as petroleum sulphonates and may be either neutral or basic. Optional ingredients mentioned are anti-oxidants such as phenyl alpha naphthylamino. In an example a grease consists of a mineral oil, lithium 12-hydroxy stearate, sodium nitrite and a basic calcium mahogany sulphonate. Specification 758,493 is referred to.
