Abstract

In a method of cold drawing metal workpieces, the surfaces of the workpieces to be drawn are lubricated by applying to them a substantially anhydrous lubricant comprising an organic lubricant carrier in which there is dispersed from 20 to 80% by weight of a solid water-soluble non-hygroscopic inorganic salt, and the lubricated workpiece is subsequently cold-drawn. The organic carrier may be water-soluble, e.g. glycerol, sorbitol, polyethylene oxide, polyethylene - polypropylene oxide, condensates of polyethylene oxide with alkyl phenols, fatty acids, fatty alcohols or fatty amines, Turkey-red oil or fatty acid polydiethanol amides, or non-water-soluble, e.g. mineral oil, animal and vegetable oils and fats, fatty acids, fatty acid amides, waxes, paraffins, halogenated hydrocarbons, petroleum jelly, petroleum sulphonates, crude paraffin wax, sulphonated oils, montan waxes or mixtures thereof in which cases an emulsifier such as ethoxylated alkyl phenol or fatty alcohol may be added so that the composition may be removed by a water rinse. The inorganic salt may be sodium carbonate, bicarbonate, pyrophosphate, silicate, fluoborate, chloride or nitrite. In examples petrol-tank halves are produced by deep-drawing from steel.
