Abstract

A lubricating grease contains a grease-forming lubricant base and a lithium soap of one or more hydroxy- or poly-hydroxy-stearic acids, the content of the lithium soap being not more than 50 per cent of the total weight of the grease. The lithium soap may be of 12-hydroxy stearic acid, hydrogenated ricinoleic acid, hydrogenated castor oil or hydrogenated castor oil fatty acids; 10-hydroxy and 9.10-dihydroxy-stearic acids are also mentioned. The lubricating base may consist of mineral oil, animal oil or vegetable oil, or mixtures thereof. Mixtures of mineral oil and hydrogenated fish oils or rosin may also be used. The lubricating grease may also contain other lithium soaps, sodium, calcium and aluminium soaps, metalloid soaps such as those of antimony and bismuth, soaps formed from organic bases such as ethanolamines, butylamine, ethylene diamine and morpholine, and an oxidation inhibitor for example m-phenylene diamine. The grease may be neutral or slightly basic. The lithium soap may be formed in situ in the lubricant base and the grease may be agitated while it is cooling from a fluid to a solid state, for example from 425 DEG F. to about 275 DEG F. The greases are preferably dehydrated by heating to 400-425 DEG F., and may be milled by the method described in Specification 632,527. Various examples of grease compositions are given.
