Abstract

A lubricating grease comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil which is thickened with an alkali metal soap of a fatty acid containing 12 to 36 carbon atoms, and a minor proportion of a mixed polyvalent metal soap of a hydroxy fatty acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms and a naphthenic acid or a mixture of polyvalent metal soaps of a hydroxy fatty acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms and of a naphthenic acid. The alkali metal soaps are sodium, potassium and lithium soaps of lauric, myristic, palmitic stearic, arachidic, behenic, oleic and linoleic acids. The polyvalent metal soaps are derived from magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, aluminium zinc, tin, iron, lead, zirconium, titanium and chromium. The hydroxy fatty acids from which the polyvalent metal soaps are derived are 9-, 10-, 11- or 12 - hydroxystearic acids, 10- and 15-hydroxypalmitic acids, hydroxy myristic acids, hydroxy behenic acids, 5, 6-, 6, 7-, 7, 8-, 8, 11-, 9, 10- and 10, 11- dihydroxystearic acids and 2, 11-dihydroxypalmitic acid; examples of soaps from these acids are aluminium 12-hydroxystearate, zinc 12-hydroxystearate, aluminium 10-hydroxypalmitate and chromium 15-hydroxypalmitate. Suitable naphthenic acids are derived from petroleum oils, and resin acids such as abietic acid; an example is calcium petroleum naphthenate. Examples of mixed soaps are the calcium soap of equi-molecular proportions of 12-hydroxystearic acid and petroleum naphthenic acids, and the aluminium soap of a mixture of 1 mol of 10-hydroxystearic acid with 2 mols of petroleum naphthenic acids. The greases contain 0.1 to 2.5 per cent by weight of each polyvalent metal soap when a mixture is used, and 0.2 to 5 per cent by weight when a mixed polyvalent metal soap is used. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil, or a synthetic oil i.e. polymerized olefins, polyalkylene oxides, such as polypropylene oxide, polymerized sulphides such as polypropylene sulphide, polymerized glycols, such as polyethylene glycol, esters of dicarboxylic acids such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, esters of acids of phosphorus, such as tricresyl phosphate, phthalates, such as dibutyl phthalate, alkyl silicates such as tetra (2-ethylhexyl) silicate, silicone liquids, or fluorocarbons. Examples describe mineral lubricating oil thickened with lithium stearate, to which is added calcium naphthenate and aluminium 12-hydroxystearate. Specification 742,517 is referred to.
