Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions (see Group III) comprise (a) a fatty acid partial ester of a polyglycerol, (b) the reaction product of a sulphur-, phosphorus- or chlorine-containing material with such an ester, or (c) a product obtained by reacting such an ester first with phosphorus pentasulphide and then with a metal oxide. The esters (a) may be derived from oleic acid, stearic acid, lauric acid or mixture of fatty acids, particularly mixtures of them contained in such commercial products as tall oil. Esterification catalysts such as stannic chloride, sulphuric acid, toluene sulphonic acid, aluminium chloride and boron fluoride may be employed in the esterification. The polyglycerol from which esters (a) are derived may be prepared by heating glycerol with or without a polymerization catalyst such as iodine, hydrochloric acid or potassium hydroxide, and may, for example, comprise a predominant proportion of the dimer with minor proportions of higher polymers. Esters (a) may be reacted with phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus pentasulphide, phosphorus sesquisulphide, sulphur, sulphur chloride or sulphur dichloride in order to prepare reaction product (b). Suitable metal oxides to be used in preparing product (c) are oxides of alkaline earth metals, magnesium, tin or zinc. In an example, glycerol is heated at 225-250 DEG F. for 15-48 hours to give a product having a viscosity of 1070 S.S.U at 100 DEG F. This product is esterified, in the presence of stannic chloride, with sufficient oleic acid to give the mono-ester. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the preparation of naphthenic acid esters of polyglycerol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:A rust-preventing composition comprises an oily base lubricant, from 0.1 to 10 per cent by weight of an oil-soluble metal petroleum sulphonate or wool fat or a mixture of both and from 0.1 to 40 per cent by weight of (a) a fatty acid partial ester of a polyglycerol (b) the reaction product of a sulphurphosphorus- or chlorine-containing material with such an ester or (c) a product obtained by reacting such an ester first with phosphorus pentasulphide and then with a metal oxide. The rust-preventing compositions may be transformer oils, lubricating oils, slushing compositions or greases, while the oily base lubricant may be mineral lubricating oil, a synthetic oily organic polymer or copolymer or a synthetic ester lubricant. The esters (a) may be derived from oleic acid, stearic acid, lauric acid, or mixtures of fatty acids, particularly mixtures of them contained in such commercial products as tall oil. The polyglycerol from which esters (a) are derived may be prepared by heating glycerol with or without a polymerisation catalyst, and may, for example, comprise a predominant proportion of the dimer with minor proportions of higher polymers. Esters (a) may be reacted with phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus pentasulphide, phosphorus sesquisulphide, sulphur, sulphur chloride or sulphur dichloride in order to prepare reaction product (b). Suitable metal oxides to be used in preparing product (c) are oxides of alkaline earth metals, magnesium, tin or zinc. The rust-preventing compositions may contain additional ingredients such as soaps, thickeners, viscosity index improvers, extreme pressure additives, oiliness agents, antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors, detergents, fatty oils and pour point depressants. In the examples, rust-inhibiting compositions are described consisting of transformer oil of mineral origin, polyglycerol mono-oleate and sodium mahogany sulphonates with or without wool fat. Tests are described in which the compositions of the examples are compared with transformer oil compositions containing either sodium mahogany sulphonates and wool fat or solely polyglycerol mono-oleate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, refers to a rust preventing composition comprising from 60 to 99.9 per cent of an oily base lubricant and from 40 to 0.1 per cent of a fatty acid ester or naphthenic acid ester of polyglycerol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
