Abstract

Lubricants, which may be fluids, semi-fluids, or greases, and including lubricant concentrates, comprise a major amount of (a) a lubricating oil, and minor amounts of (b) a metal salt of a C2- 30 carboxylic acid, and (c) a C40- 250 alkenyl succinic acid or anhydride or a metal salt thereof, wherein the metals in (b) and (c) are alkali or alkaline earth metals, preferably calcium. The oil (a) may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil, e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl-sebacate, complex esters, polysilicones, "Ucons" (Trade Mark), formals, and polycarbonates. Additive (b) includes both single and mixed salts, particularly mixed salts of C2- 6 acids with either C7- 12 or C13- 30 acids. The acids may be selected from acetic, capric, lauric, caprylic, nonanoic, stearic, 1,2-hydroxy stearic, di-hydroxy stearic, arachidic, oleic, ricinoleic, hydrofol and tallow acids. The alkenyl group of additive (c) is preferably derived from a polyisobutylene of M.W. 700-3000. The composition may also contain thickeners (such as polymers of C2- 4 monolefins of M.W. 10,000-200,000, e.g. polyethylene, clay, carbon black or silica gel), phenyl-a -napthylamine, polyisobutylene, aluminium hydroxy-stearate, and sodium nitrite. The proportions of the additives used may vary widely according to the intended use of the lubricants, examples being given.
