Abstract

Mixtures of salts of amic and dicarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting 1 mol. of a primary amine containing 2-50 carbon atoms with at least 1.5 mols. of a dicarboxylic acid containing 3-54 carbon atoms, and reacting the mixture with a metal oxide or hydroxide. Various amines and acids are referred to; the metal oxides or hydroxides may be those of Groups I, II, III or IV especially lithium, sodium, potassium, silver, magnesium, calcium, zinc, strontium, cadmium, barium, aluminium and lead. In the example, a salt is prepared by reacting adipic acid and a mixture of amines comprising 30 per cent hexadecylamine, 25 per cent octadecylamine and 45 per cent hexadecenylamine and reacting the mixture with lithium hydroxide. Specifications 774,085 and 774,086 are referred to.ALSO:A grease composition comprises a lubricating oil thickened to a grease consistency with a mixture of the metal salt of an amic acid of the general formula:- <FORM:0774084/III/1> where R is a hydrocarbon radicle containing 2-50 C atoms, R1 is a hydrocarbon radicle containing 1-52 C atoms, M is a metal of valency x, together with a metal salt of a dicarboxylic acid of formula:- <FORM:0774084/III/2> wherein R2 is a polymethylene group containing 1-52 C atoms. The metal is preferably from Groups I to IV. Examples of suitable radicals and metals are given. The examples refer to a grease comprising a naphthenic base oil and the lithium salts of a mixture of 1.5 mols adipic acid with 1 mol. of a mixture of hexadecyl-, octadecyl- and octadecenylamines. The greases may contain 6-50 per cent of the salts. Lubricating oils referred to are naphthenic base, paraffin base and mixed base oils; other hydrocarbon lubricants, e.g. oils derived from coal products; and synthetic oils, e.g. alkylene polymers alkylene oxide polymers, dicarboxylic acid esters, liquid esters of phosphorus acids, alkyl benzene polymers and silicon polymers.
