Abstract

1425487 Lubricants UOP Inc 7 May 1973 [8 May 1972] 21638/73 Heading C5F A method of working a metal which is in movable contact with another metal comprises applying to the points of contact a lubricant comprising an alkylphenol and optionally water or solvent other than mineral oil, the amount of alkylphenol being at least 10% by wt. of the lubricant exclusive of water or solvent. Additives may be present such as fatty acids, sulphonates, alcohols, ethers, fatty acid esters, alkanolamine and alkali metal soaps of fatty acids, inorganic and organic nitrates and phosphates. The phenol may be substituted by groups containing hetero-atoms. Examples use octyl-, nonyl- or dodecylphenols in conjunction with oleic acid, stearic acid, or potassium stearate, alone or mixed with water, or hydrogenated tallow glycerides. The lubricant may be used in the working (e.g. tube reducing) or non-ferrous alloys.
