Abstract

A lubricating oil composition contains, as an oxidation inhibitor, a di-alkali metal salt of o-, m- or p-hydroxy benzoic acid. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil, examples of the latter being esters of monobasic acids (e.g. C8 oxo alcohol ester of C8 oxo acid), esters of dibasic acids (e.g. di-2-ethyl hexyl sebacate), esters of glycols (e.g. C13 oxo acid diester of tetraethylene glycol), complex esters, esters of phosphoric acid, halocarbon oils, sulphite esters, silicone oils, carbonates, polyglycols, or any mixtures of these. The salts may be sodium or lithium salts, the alkali metal atoms replacing the hydrogen atoms of both the OH and the COOH groups of the hydroxy benzoic acid. The lubricating oil composition may be a grease wherein the thickener is a salt or soap (e.g. a metal salt of a fatty acid or sulphonic acid), a mixed salt or soap-salt complex, especially a complex formed by the concentralization, with a metal base, of a mixture of one or more C12-C30 fatty acids (and/or a C7-C12 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid) and a C2-C6 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, a polymeric thickener (e.g. polyethylene) or an inorganic thickener (e.g. graphite, carbon black or clay). The metal component of the soap, salt or complex soap-salt thickeners may be an alkali or alkaline earth metal, magnesium or alumininum. The lubricating oil composition may also contain viscosity index improvers (e.g. polyisobutylene), corrosion inhibitors (e.g. sorbitan monooleate), other antioxidants (e.g. phenyl-a -naphthylamine), pour depressants and dyes. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing (i) disodium or dilithium salicylate, (ii) dilithium salicylate and mixed lithium-calcium soap of 12-hydroxy stearic acid, with or without phenyl-a -naphthylamine, and (iii) disodium salicylate and sodium stearate. Compositions (ii) and (iii) are greases. The effect of replacing the dilithium salicylate of (ii) with dilithium phthalate, dilithium terephthalate, phenyl-a -naphthylamine, or a mixture of substituted diphenylamine and zinc dithiocarbamate, is described.
