Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises an ester-based lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a soluble alkylated benzotriazole. The preferred synthetic ester lubricants for use in the composition have the following structural formul : R2OOCR1COOR12; R2OOCR1COOR4 OOCR3; R3COOR4OOCR31; R2(OOCR1 COOR4)nOOCR11COOR21; or R3COOR4 (OOCR1COOR14(nOOCR31, where the groups R are derived from dicarboxylic acids HOOCR1 COOH; monohydric alcohols R2OH; monocarboxylic acids R3COOH; and glycols HOR4 OH. n is a number between 1 and 6 and when fractional it represents the average formula of a mixture of compounds. The alcohols R2OH are preferably aliphatic, ether, or thio-ether alcohols and desirably branch-chained, e.g. oxo alcohols. The alkylated benzotriazoles include polyalkylated benzotriazoles. Optional ingredients are antioxidants, e.g. catechol, o-amino thiophenol, o-amino phenol, benzoxazole, mercaptobenthiazole, 1,4,2-benoxazine, phenothiazine, thianthrene, quinoxaline, and the corresponding naphthalene derivatives, resorcinol, pyrogallol, hydroquinone, ethyl salicylate, butyl salicylate, mono- or di-butyl phthalate, salicyl anilide, N,N1-di-t-butyl-p-phenylene diamine, or 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene. Other optional ingredients are V.I. improvers, e.g. polymerized unsaturated esters, pour depressants, E.P. additives and wear-reducing agents. In an example, 1 per cent wt. of a commercial mixture of alkylated benzotriazoles, wherein the alkyl substituent has up to 12 carbon atoms, is incorporated in a blend of one part by weight of dinonyl sebacate and two parts by weight of a complex ester derived from sebacic acid, polyethylene glycol (M.W. 200) and 2-ethyl hexanol. According to the Provisional Specification any soluble triazole may be used as a rust inhibitor in ester-based lubricating oils.
