Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises a neutral metal salt of a C1-C30 phosphonic acid. The phosphonate is an anti-oxidant, imparts load-carrying and anti-wear properties to the composition and can be used to thicken the lubricating oil to form greases having high dropping points. The phosphonate may be a salt of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, magnesium or aluminium, and may be added directly to the lubricating oil or formed in situ by reaction between the phosphonic acid and a metal base in the presence of at least a portion of the lubricating oil. The lubricating oil may be a mineral or a synthetic oil, or mixtures thereof. Synthetic oils mentioned are di(2-ethylhexyl)sebacate, glycol esters, complex esters, formals, silicones and carbonates. The lubricating oil composition may contain additional ingredients such as metal salts of C1-C30 fatty acids, metal lactates, metal hydroxy stearates, metal alkaryl sulphonates, metal petroleum sulphonates, other thickening agents (e.g. polyethylene or carbon black), viscosity index improvers (e.g. polyisobutylene), corrosion inhibitors (e.g. sorbitan monooleate), pour depressants, detergents or dispersing agents and dyes. In examples, lubricating greases are prepared from mineral lubricating oil and (i) cetane phosphonic acid and lithium hydroxide, (ii) dodecane phosphonic acid and calcium hydroxide, (iii) ethane phosphonic acid, cetane phosphonic acid and calcium hydroxide, (iv) ethane phosphonic acid, dodecane phosphonic acid and lithium hydroxide, (v) ethane phosphonic acid, calcium hydroxide and calcium petroleum sulphonate, (vi) cetane phosphonic acid, calcium hydroxide and calcium acetate, (vii) benzene phosphonic acid and aluminium hydroxide or (viii) sodium dodecane- or ethane-phosphonate, sodium 12-hydroxy stearate, sodium petroleum sulphonate and phenyl alpha naphthylamine. In the case of (iii), the grease may be cut back with further mineral lubricating oil to give a fluid lubricating composition. In the case of (viii), the effect of omitting the phosphonate or replacing it by trisodium phosphate is mentioned. In a further example, a lubricating grease is prepared from methyl phenyl silicone oil, ethane phosphonic acid and calcium hydroxide. The grease compositions of Specification 730,875 are disclaimed.
