Abstract

An anti-corrosion composition comprises a hydrocarbon oil, a minor proportion of an oil-soluble alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphonate or naphthenate and a minor proportion of the reaction product between a C8-C24 fatty acid and ethylene diamine or diethylene triamine. The hydrocarbon oil may be mineral lubricating oil or a volatile oil such as gasoline, kerosine, white spirit or gas oil, but, when a volatile oil is employed, the composition preferably also contains a film-forming material such as wax, resin or petrolatum. Fatty acids mentioned are lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, ricinoleic, eleomargaric, erucic, behenic, arachidic and lignoceric acids, and the reaction product may be an amine salt, amide, amide salt or imidazole. The metal sulphonate may be a petroleum sulphonate or an alkyl benzene sulphonate. The composition may also contain dyes, pour depressors, heat-thickened, sulphurized or voltolized fatty oils, organometallic compounds, metallic or other soaps, sludge dispersants, anti-oxidants, thickeners, viscosity index improvers, other corrosion inhibitors, oiliness agents, resins, olefin polymers, voltolized fats, mineral oils or waxes, graphite and zinc oxide. The use of oil-soluble non-ionic emulsifiers in the composition is disclaimed. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing sodium mahogany sulphonate and one of oleyl-, stearyl-, lauryl-, or ricinoleyl - amidoethylamine, oleyl - 2 - imidazole or ethylene diamine dioleate.
