Abstract

An anti-corrosive composition comprises (1) an hydrocarbon oil, (2) a minor proportion by weight of the reaction product between a C8-C24 fatty acid and ethylene diamine or diethylene triamine, and (3) a minor proportion by weight of one or more naphthenic acids. Ingredient (2) may be an amine salt, an amido-amino compound, an amido-ethane compound or an imidazole compound, and may be derived from such fatty acids as lauric, stearic, oleic or ricinoleic acid. The hydrocarbon oil may be a mineral oil and the composition may contain additional ingredients such as antioxidants, extreme pressure agents and metal deactivators. In examples, steel plates are coated with mineral oil compositions containing naphthenic acids and the amido-amine obtained by the condensation of ethylenediamine with oleic or ricinoleic acid. The effect of replacing the naphthenic acids with oleic acid or peanut fatty acid is described.
