Abstract

A composition, especially suitable for use as a steam turbine lubricant, comprises (1) a major proportion of mineral lubricating oil and minor proportions of (2) an oil-miscible sulphurized unsaturated fatty acid having at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule; (3) an oil-miscible aliphatic-substituted dicarboxylic acid having at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule and at least one carbon atom between the carboxyl groups; (4) a chlorinated paraffin wax, (5) an oil-soluble aromatic amine; and (6) a metal deactivator. In preparing ingredient (2), the fatty acid may be sulphurized by reaction with sulphur, sulphur chloride, phosphorous polysulphides, mixtures of sulphur and hydrogen sulphide or mixtures of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. Ingredient (3) may be a C8-C30 alkyl- or alkenyl-substituted dicarboxylic acid, while ingredient (5) may be a compound of the formula RR1NH, wherein R and R1 stand for the same or different mono- or poly-cyclic aromatic radicles. Ingredient (6) may be a compound obtained by reacting an aromatic o-hydroxy aldehyde with an alkylene polyamine or derivative thereof. The composition may also contain antioxidants such as alkyl phenols, with or without naphthylamines. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described in which ingredient (2) is a sulphurization product of oleic, linoleic or ricinoleic acid; (3) is C14-C24 alkenyl succinic acid, C16-C18 alkyl succinic acid, C18-C22 alkenyl adipic acid or C18-C22 alkenyl malonic acid; (5) is diphenylamine or a ,b -dinaphthylamine; and (6) in N,N-di-salicylal-1,2-propylene diamine. In some of the examples, 4-methyl-phenol are present as antioxidants. Specifications 562,850 and 694,004 are referred to.
