Abstract

Dilute solutions of the water-soluble sulphonates of unsaturated fatty acids of the monoethylenic series or their glycerides and containing 12 to 20 carbon atoms are used as lubricating coolants in cold metal reduction processes. The solution may be from 1/2 to 10 per cent and acids of the groups consisting of lauroleic, myristoleic, oleic, gadoleic and linoleic. Other sulphonates may be added such as the fatty monohydric alcohol sulphate esters described in Specification 732,735. The solution may be neutralized by an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide. In metal working processes the solution is continuously circulated through large settling tanks which permit mineral oil and other contaminants to be skimmed off. Specification 729,615 also is referred to.ALSO:Dilute solutions of the water-soluble sulphonates of unsaturated fatty acids of the monoethylenic series or their glycerides and containing 12 to 20 carbon atoms are used as lubricating coolants in cold metal reduction processes. The solution may be from 1/2 to 10 per cent and acids of the groups consisting of lauroleic, myristoleic, oleic, gardoleic and linoleic. Other sulphonates may be added such as the fatty monohydric alcohol sulphate esters described in Specification 732,735. The solution may be neutralized by an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide. In metal working processes the solution is continuously circulated through large settling tanks which permit mineral oil and other contaminants to be skimmed off.
