Abstract

A metal-fabricating lubricant, for use in such processes as cold rolling, for example of steel sheets, cold drawing or stamping and forming with the aid of dies and presses, comprises 40-60 per cent. by weight of foots oil, 5-30 per cent. of a petrolatum having a melting point of 90-130 DEG F., 5-25 per cent. of a heavy mineral oil having a viscosity of 100-350 secs. Saybolt at 210 DEG F., 5-20 per cent. of a fat and 2-20 per cent. of a higher fatty acid. The lubricant has a melting point of 90-140 DEG F. and a viscosity of 40-60 secs. Saybolt at 210 DEG F. The foots oil, which is the oil which runs off from paraffin wax during the sweating process, may be of paraffinic, naphthenic or mixed origin. Fats mentioned are hydrogenated fish oil, tallow, woolfat and hydrogenated cottonseed oil while fatty acids mentioned are palmitic, stearic and oleic acids and hydrogenated fish oil or cottonseed oil acids. If desired, the lubricant may be used in admixture with palm oil and may be emulsified with water before use. In the examples, lubricants are described consisting of foots oil, petrolatum, cylinder oil, hydrogenated fish oil and hydrogenated fish oil fatty acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to a lubricant in which the foots oil is replaced by a mixture of light mineral oil having a viscosity of 70-200 secs. Saybolt at 100 DEG F. and a paraffin wax having a melting point of 90-160 DEG F. Reference is also made to a lubricant comprising at least 60 per cent. by weight of petroleum hydrocarbons selected from the group consisting of light and heavy mineral oils, foots oil, sweater oil, paraffin wax and petrolatum and 5-40 per cent. of fatty material selected from the group consisting of fats and fatty acids. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
