Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a metal soap of a keto acid of the C12-C22 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid series. The keto acid may be derived, for example, from palmitic, myristic or lauric acids; 4-keto stearic acid, derived from hydrogenated oiticica oil and 12-keto stearic acid are particularly mentioned. Soaps of alkali or alkaline earth metals, especially of calcium, may be used. The lubricating oil may be mineral oil and/or synthetic oil such as the dibasic acid alkyl esters or polyglycols. From 5-30 per cent. of the soap may be used in forming the grease. The grease may be prepared by mixing the fatty acid or ester with mineral lubricating oil, adding the metal base saponifying agent, heating and then adding more lubricating oil. The greases may contain other soaps such as those of hydroxy acids or normal fatty acids, and also other conventional additives. Specification 669,206 is referred to.
