Abstract

A lubricating grease comprises an oleaginous liquid lubricating base thickened to a grease consistency with 5-20 per cent of indigo and 5-20 per cent of a sodium or lithium soap of a fatty acid containing 12-16 carbon atoms in the molecule, the percentages being based on the weight of the composition. The lubricating base may be an oil of mineral, vegetable, animal or synthetic origin. A suitable synthetic lubricating base is a complex ester formed by reacting a dibasic aliphatic acid with a glycol and end-blocking the reaction product with a monohydric aliphatic alcohol or a monocarboxylic aliphatic acid, and such a complex ester may be used in admixture with mineral oil. The fatty acid may be lauric, myristic or palmitic acid and the soap may be formed in situ by saponifying fatty acids or their glycerides in the presence of mineral lubricating oil. The lubricating grease may be acid, neutral or alkaline and may contain additional ingredients such as oxidation inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, tackiness agents and extreme pressure agents. Suitable oxidation inhibitors are diphenylamine, a - or b -naphthylamine, p-phenylene diamine and N,N1-diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine. The lubricating grease may also contain tricresyl phosphate, or additional thickening agents such as other soaps and other finely divided solids. In the examples lubricating greases are described consisting of (a) mineral lubricating oil, a complex ester (prepared by reacting together 2 mols. of sebacic acid, 1 mol. of 2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol and 2 mols. of 2-ethylhexanol), indigo, sodium or lithium myristate, N,N1-diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine and tricresyl phosphate; and (b) mineral lubricating oil, ditridecyl azelate, indigo, sodium myristate, N,N1-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine and tricresyl phosphate. For comparison purposes, lubricating greases are described similar to (a) above but wherein the indigo or the soap is omitted or wherein the indigo and soap is replaced by carbon black or a mixture of carbon black and sodium myristate.
