Abstract

A composition containing a soap of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid of 12-18 carbon atoms also includes, as a stabilizer for the soap, 0.05-1.0 per cent by weight of a hydrazinium salt of an organic acid, an azine or a non-aromatic hydrazide. Many such compounds are listed, but the preferred compounds are benzalazine, salicylalazine, cinnamalazine and dimethylketazine; hydrazides of acetic, lauric, stearic, myristic and sebacic acids; carbohydrazide; and the hydrazinium salts of glycollic, propionic, stearic, naphthenic and benzoic acids. Phenolic bactericides, e.g. 2 : 21-dihydroxy - 3 : 5 : 6 : 31 : 51 : 61 - hexachlorodiphenylmethane, hexylresorcinol, cresol, thymol, chlorothymol or guaiacol, may be included in the compositions, which may be produced in cake, plate, bead, liquid or other form. The soap may be an ammonium, amine, alkali, or alkaline earth metal, aluminium, zinc, or cadmium soap but is preferably a sodium or potassium soap. The compositions may also be incorporated with petroleum oils to form greases, in which case a lithium, sodium, calcium, aluminium or other metal soap derived from tall oil, tallow, castor oil, or waste fatty acids is suitably used.ALSO:A composition containing a soap of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid of 12-18 carbon atoms also includes, as a stabilizer for the soap, 0.05-1.0 per cent by weight of a hydrazinium salt of an organic acid, an azine or a non-aromatic hydrazide. Many such compounds are listed, but the preferred compounds are benzalazine, salicylalazine, cinnamalazine and dimethylketazine; hydrazides of acetic, lauric, stearic, myristic and sebacic acids; carbohydrazide; and the hydrazinium salts of glycollic, propionic, stearic, naphthenic and benzoic acids. The soap may be an ammonium, amine, alkali or alkaline earth metal, aluminium, zinc, or cadmium soap but is preferably a sodium or potassium soap.
