Abstract

A water-in-oil emulsion lubricant comprises urea, or an alkyl derivative thereof, a major proportion of a lubricating oil and a minor proportion of water and an emulsifying agent. The oil is preferably a mineral oil of 30-150 SUS/210 DEG F., but synthetic oils may be used. The alkyl derivatives of urea which may be used are the N-monoalkyl and N-dialkyl ureas of general formula R-NH-CO-NH-R1, where R and R1 are H or C1-3 alkyl groups. The urea or alkyl urea should be dispersed in the aqueous phase. The compositions should contain less than 10 per cent of the emulsifying agent, e.g. the condensation products of fatty alcohols, fatty acids or esters with glycols and alkylene oxides such as ethylene glycol and ethylene oxide, and/or the partial fatty esters of polyhydric alcohols, e.g. sorbitol or glyceryl mono-oleate. Other emulsifying agents mentioned are metal soaps, petroleum sulphonates, e.g. calcium or sodium sulphonates, and alkyl salicylates and salts thereof. Other optional ingredients are sulphurized sperm oil, antioxidants, colloidal clays, alkaline earth derivatives of phenol sulphides, and oiliness agents, e.g. polar organic compounds containing carboxyl groups, nitrogen or sulphur.
